Lafayette, Louisiana - A celebration of life will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, August 15, 2025 in Delhomme Funeral Home - Chapel of the Flowers for John Edward Erny, 77, who passed away on August 7, 2025 at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Pastor Mike Walker will conduct the funeral services.

A private burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Mr. Erny, a resident of Lafayette, was the son of the late Lawrence "Prof" Erny and the former Evelyn Sibille. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and an unmatched devotion to those he loved. His faith and optimistic belief sustained John through many physical battles following a multiple transplant surgery in 1995.

After leaving the family music industry, John built The Erny Insurance agency from the ground up, growing it into a thriving business with multiple locations across Louisiana. Just weeks before his passing, John had proudly merged his agency with Select Risk Insurance Group. He was genuinely excited about his new role as Senior Vice President, seeing it as the next chapter in doing what he loved most.

John's passion for sports followed him after an active high school career at Northside High School with a traveling softball team & culminating with high school officiating. He served his industry and community in countless ways. He was a member and past president of the Professional Insurance Agents of Acadiana and served on the state board. He was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Acadiana, and member of the Louisiana High School Officials Association.

John's life was rich with deep friendships - especially his close-knit group of Phi Kappa Theta (PKT) fraternity brothers who continue to gather regularly, his lifelong friend group from Northside High, and his dear friend and trainer, Kevin Castille who continually encouraged him in the gym. John's quick wit, unwavering generosity, and big-hearted nature touched everyone who knew him. His most recent passion was his grandson who brought so much joy into his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Martha "Marti" Swarthout Erny; son Scott Erny, daughter Alexandra Erny Johanning and her husband Mike Johanning; grandson, Barron Johanning; siblings, Lawrence "Larry" (Glory) Erny, Beverly "Sue" Erny (Mickey) Marcello, and Rita Erny Pendergraft; sister-in-law, Millie Erny; and numerous cousins, nieces & nephews who were cherished and loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Evelyn Erny; brother, James "Jim" Erny; and brother-in-law, Marion "Penny" Pendergraft, & Uncle Gerald "Jerry" Sibille

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Friday, August 15, 2025 from 9:30 AM until the time of service.
