Betty McRoberts Hollingsworth

Betty McRoberts Hollingsworth, treasured wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Born on February 4, 1930 in Birmingham, AL, Betty had recently celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends in her home at The Blake of Lafayette. She was a bright and spirited lady, often described as 'spicy', funny, and full of life by friends, family, and her beloved caregivers.
Wife of William H. Hollingsworth "Bill", Betty and "Willie", as she called him, raised three children, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hollingsworth Magee (Thibodaux), Lewis Hollingsworth (Lafayette), and Claudia Hollingsworth Lyles (Lafayette). Bill Hollingsworth was a geologist with Sinclair Oil and Gas, Atlantic Richfield, SLAPCO, and Celeron Oil and Gas. Business transfers moved the family from Jackson, MS, New Orleans, Lafayette, LA, Denver, CO, Anchorage, AK, Dallas, TX, and back to their favorite home of Lafayette. Betty made lovely homes in each city, making sure the children were secure in new schools and the communities. Exploring the new cities, exposing the children to the history and culture of the regions, and tramping around the mountains with weekend picnics expanded their family life and horizons. Finding a church home for the family was always a priority in each new city they moved into.
Betty enjoyed friendships in Lafayette's L'Heure D'Amitié Club, The Geological Wives' Club, her Garden Club, The Betty Birthday Club, PEO's Lafayette Chapter, Lafayette General Candy Stripers, and others. She served as a Girl Scout leader and PTA president of L.J. Alleman Elementary School in the 1960's. They were patrons of the arts in Lafayette and major supporters of ULL athletics. Her yard and garden brought her much joy, pride, and awards from her garden club. She and Willie were founding and long-time members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Lafayette. Betty drove Meals on Wheels for many years for the church. In her later years, she converted to Catholicism and found much comfort and solace in her faith.
Becoming a grandmother gave her much joy and she treasured her five grandchildren and followed their school activities, athletic games, and provided many memorable family trips to their condo in Destin, FL. As an adult she was initiated into Phi Mu Sorority, Betty and Willie traveled the world and brought home many treasures, memories, and new friends.
Betty is survived by her children Betsy Hollingsworth Magee (Wes), Lewis H. Hollingsworth, and Claudia Hollingsworth Lyles (Ted). Five grandchildren, William Wesley Magee, Scott Lanier Magee, Todd Martin Magee, Kimberly Lyles Cormier, and Elizabeth Lyles Kees. Eight great grandchildren were her crown of glory in her later years.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, William Haywood Hollingsworth, parents, Claude Eugene and Sara Mason McRoberts, brothers Claude Eugene McRoberts, Jr., Martin Lanier McRoberts, and sister-in-law Nan Dunklin McRoberts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, March 14, 2025 in Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church on ULL Campus - 501 E St. Mary Blvd., Lafayette, LA. Fr. Patrick Broussard, Pastor of Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and officiate the funeral services. Fr. Bryce Sibley will serve as Concelebrant of the Mass and assist with the funeral services.
The burial, following the Mass, will be held at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery - 2111 W. Pinhook Road, Lafayette, LA.
The family is so grateful for the wonderful staff at The Blake where Betty spent almost nine years of her life, making it a loving home. She was attended by loving, caring, and skilled caregivers for the last year of her life: Catrina Boudreaux, Amanda Cole, Lisa Chargois, Dana Guidry, Rose Sonnier, Ann Perro, Daejanay Guidry, and Ruqayyah Azeez. The Hollingsworth family was very blessed by these ladies' love and dedication to their mother.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.
